PROSTATE EDUCATION
African American men have the highest prostate cancer rates. The risk of being diagnosed with this disease is 24 percent higher for African American men than among non-Hispanic white men, and their risk of dying of this disease is nearly two times higher.
Open Cities Health Center partners with the American Cancer Society to offer a "Let's Talk About It" program directed toward African American males and their loved ones that provides information on everything individuals and families need to know about prostate cancer in African American men. OCHC holds educational sessions at barbershops, churches, community centers and other gathering places. Sessions include:
Information from a medical provider
Hearing from a cancer survivor
Light refreshments.
Women are welcome at the events.
